Set up a free CDN in front of WordPress
A CDN brings your static files closer to your international visitors. Cloudflare offers a large enough free plan for the majority of WordPress sites.
Setup steps
- Create a free Cloudflare account and add your domain.
- Point your name servers (NS) at your registrar to those provided by Cloudflare.
- Enable proxy mode (orange cloud) on your site's DNS registration.
- Enable automatic caching of static files in cache rules.
Recommended cache rule
# Page Rule Cloudflare
URL: yoursite.com/wp-content/*
Cache Level: Everything
Edge Cache TTL: 1 month
Tip: Never activate the full cache on /wp-admin or URLs containing session settings, otherwise it will break the connection to the dashboard.
frequently asked questions
Is the free Cloudflare plan really enough?
Yes for the vast majority of showcase sites and blogs. Paid plans mainly add advanced rules and priority support.
Does the NS change cut my site?
DNS propagation usually takes between 1 and 24 hours, without cut-off if configured correctly upstream.
