Namecheap vs Cloudflare DNS: Comparative Performance and Security

Your domain is at Namecheap and you hesitate to keep its DNS or switch to Cloudflare? Here's what really changes for speed, safety and day-to-day management.

In short: which one to choose?

For most WordPress sites, the best combination is to keep Namecheap as a registrar (where the domain is registered) and delegate DNS to Cloudflare. Namecheap's DNS is enough for a simple site; Cloudflare gets interesting whenever you want a CDN, DDoS protection, or quick DNS changes.

Transparency: This comparison is qualitative. We did not measure sig- nal resolution speed numbers; For independent measurements, check DNSPERF or test from your target regions.

performance

DNS resolution time is only a small part of the total loading time. The two services respond quickly in absolute terms; The difference is played on the Anycast network (the query is served by the nearest point of presence) and the propagation speed of your changes. The most visible gain comes mostly from Cloudflare's proxy and CDN, not DNS resolution alone.

Security

  • Anti-DDoS: Cloudflare proxy absorbs attacks before they reach your server.
  • DNSSEC: Signs DNS responses to limit cache poisoning.
  • IP of hidden origin: effective only if it is not exposed elsewhere (email or sub-domain records in DNS only).
  • Registrar: Enable Registrar Lock and Dual Authentication at Namecheap, regardless of the chosen DNS.

Keep Namecheap and pass DNS to Cloudflare

  • Create a free Cloudflare account and add your domain.
  • Verify that all records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT) have been imported, especially MX, SPF and DKIM.
  • Pass the email records to "DNS Only": the proxy is only suitable for web traffic.
  • At Namecheap, open Domain List > Manage > NameServers, choose "Custom DNS" and paste the two nameservers given by Cloudflare.
  • Once the domain is active on Cloudflare, activate DNSSEC and then add the DS record to Namecheap.

frequently asked questions

Can I keep my domain at Namecheap?

Yes I do. Only name servers change; The domain remains registered and renewed at Namecheap.

Can Cloudflare Proxy disrupt my emails?

Not if MX records and messaging subdomains remain in “DNS Only”. The proxy is only for HTTP/HTTPS traffic.

Is Cloudflare's free plan enough?

For the majority of blogs and showcase sites, yes. Paid offers above all add an advanced WAF and priority support.
