High Performance Nginx: 7 settings that halve WordPress load time

by the team UseStackPulse Updated on August 21, 2026 8 min reading

A slow WordPress costs traffic and SEO rankings. By reconfiguring three blocks of your Nginx — FastCGI cache, Brotli compression and Micro-Cache — you can reduce the TTFB by half in less than 20 minutes, without changing hosts.

Quick causes of a slow WordPress under Nginx

  • No server-side FastCGI cache, each PHP request recalculates the page.
  • Compression deactivated or in gzip alone, instead of Brotli.
  • No cache rules for static files (CSS, JS, images).
  • Undersized shared hosting plan in RAM/CPU.

Solution 1 — Enable FastCGI Cache

The FastCGI cache stores the HTML response generated by PHP-FPM and ressert it directly, without going through WordPress.

fastcgi_cache_path /var/run/nginx-cache levels=1:2 keys_zone=WORDPRESS:100m inactive=60m;
fastcgi_cache_key "scheme+method+host+uri";

server block:
  location matching .php files:
    fastcgi_cache WORDPRESS;
    fastcgi_cache_valid 200 60m;
    fastcgi_cache_bypass skip_cache;
    fastcgi_no_cache skip_cache;
    add_header X-FastCGI-Cache upstream_cache_status;

Tip: Always exclude /wp-admin and pages with cookies from the cache.

Solution 2 — Brotli compression on the fly

Brotli reduces the size of HTML/CSS/JS files by about 20% more than GZIP.

brotli on;
brotli_comp_level 5;
brotli_static on;
brotli_types text/plain text/css application/javascript application/json;

frequently asked questions

Does FastCGI cache work with WooCommerce?

Yes, provided you exclude the basket, the customer account and the checkout via FASTCGI_CACHE_BYPASS.

Is Brotli compatible with all shared hosts?

No, the Brotli module must be compiled on the server side. A VPS or a managed host allows you to activate it.

What speed gain does concretely expect?

The TTFB generally goes from 600-900 ms to 150-300 ms after activation of the FastCGI cache and Brotli.
